Eye puffiness and under-eye swelling is a common cosmetic problem. It is caused due to a wide range of reasons. 

Mostly eye puffiness does not need any treatment but sometimes it is caused due to mild and severe health conditions

It is caused due to some kind of allergies, blocked tear ducts, and sometimes it is caused due to failure of some organs.

Aging and genetics are also a cause of under-eye bags. It runs in your families if it is caused genetically. The tissues become weak around the eyes. 

The weakness of eyes tissues leads to fat deposition in the lower lids. Due to this reason, eye tissues become swallow and the skin around the eyes becomes very thin and delicate.

If eye puffiness is caused due to the failure of some organs then, the person feels difficulty in breathing and feels severe pain in the body.

Symptoms of Eye Puffiness:

Swelling under the eye may lead to partial eye closure. It may affect one or both eyes depending upon the underlying cause.

Causes of Eye Swelling Under One Eye:

Causes of Swelling under one eye are the following:

Excessive Eye Rubbing:

Sometimes Peoples rub their eyes due to fatigue, itchiness, or a foreign object in the eye. Excessive eye rubbing can lead to swelling. 

Avoid rubbing and touching the eyes will help the eye to return to normal.

Injury:

Injury can cause swelling under the eye. A cut or bruise may cause swelling, discoloration, and pain in the eye

Sometimes, insect bites, such as a mosquito bite that occurs near the eye, can cause swelling.

If a person keeps the area clean and dry small injuries near the eye area may heal on their own. 

If the swelling and pain get worse, or there are signs of infection, such as pus or discharge, then a person may need medical treatment.

Blocked Tear Duct:

Swelling under-eye can also cause a blocked tear duct. It prevents tears from draining from the eye that causes swelling.

It can develop due to an eye infection, an injury, or a tumor.  Sometimes, the blockage resolves on its own if it is caused due to an injury. An infection may need antibiotics.

Stye:

A stye is an infection that usually occurs at the base of the eyelashes. it causes a painful lump under the eye

When a person has a stye, they might feel that there is a foreign object in his eye and a person’s eye may also feel scratchy, sensitive to light, or watery.

Styes can clear up on their own. If a stye does not improve, a person may visit a doctor. The doctor prescribes antibiotics that help to drain it.

Periorbital Cellulitis:

Periorbital cellulitis is a condition in which a wound near the eye becomes infected. It causes severe under-eye swelling, pain, and inflammation in the eye. Mostly, it is common in children and is often due to trauma or sinusitis.

To prevent damage to the eyes this condition requires medical treatment and other organsDrainage, surgery to remove dead tissue, and use of antibiotics all are included in the treatment of periorbital cellulitis.

Lymphoma:

Lymphoma is a type of cancer that can affect the eye area and cause swelling. A person with lymphoma contains swelling and a visible lump or tumor. Radiotherapy or Chemotherapy is the treatment of lymphoma. 

Causes of Swelling on Both Sides:

Swelling under both eyes caused due to many factors, such as:

Bags Under the Eyes:

 When the person wakes up in the morning they may notice mild swelling under the eyes

This can commonly occur due to aging, fluid collecting under the eyes during sleep, or both.

Smoking, lack of sleep, fluid retention and allergies cause bags under the eye. 

Getting enough sleep, sleeping with the head in a slightly elevated position, and cool compresses help to reduce their under-eye bags.

Allergies:

Some allergens, such as pollen and pet dander, can irritate the eyes, causing an allergic reaction. Eye swelling, itching, burning, and tearing are the common symptoms of allergy. Sometimes a person may also have other allergy symptoms, such as a stuffy nose, sneezing, or an itchy throat in this condition.

If the swelling under-eye area is caused due to an allergic reaction, taking an over-the-counter (OTC) allergy medication, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) that helps to reduce the swelling. 

A severe allergic reaction may lead to anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency that causes hives, swollen airways, and difficulty breathing.

Conjunctivitis:

Conjunctivitis a type of infection. It is commonly caused due to bacteria or viruses. Commonly, it causes bloodshot, irritated eyes that may itch, burn, or hurt. In a bacterial eye infectionwhite or yellow pus may produce.

Viral conjunctivitis mostly affects both eyes, but a bacterial infection may start in one eye and spread to both

Conjunctivitis is contagious, it spread from one person to another person. So a person with these symptoms should avoid touching the eyes and visit a doctor for treatment.

Morbihan Disease:

Morbihan disease can cause severe swelling under the eye and on the upper cheekbones.

It is commonly considered as a condition a form of rosacea, which causes the redden or darken skin on the face. 

Morbihan disease can be cured with steroids and sometimes with minor surgery that helps to drain the excess fluid.

Organ Failure:

Under-eye swelling in both eyes is usually a symptom of organ failure. The heart, kidney, and liver failure cause swelling under the eyes. 

The failure of these organs affects the body’s ability to regulate fluid balance, which will cause swelling in the feet and other areas of the body like the belly.
