What are the Causes of Iron Deficiency Anemia in Women?

We all know that iron deficiency anemia is common especially in women. Pregnancy, heavy menstruation bleeding, and uterine fibroids are some common reasons for iron deficiency anemia in women.

When a woman bleeds more than normal routine then it is called heavy menstruation bleeding.

Normal bleeding last for 4 to 5 days and blood loss about 2 to 3 tablespoon. But in heavy menstruation, the bleeding lasts for more then 7 days and the blood loss is twice that the normal.

During pregnancy and at childbearing age (20 to 50) women have this disease.

During pregnancy the risk of this disease increase because pregnant women need more blood and iron for the growth and development of their babies.

Uterine fibroids also a cause of iron deficiency anemia. But sometimes fibroids don’t cause heavy bleeding. 

Heavy bleeding is sometimes also caused due to the growth of tumors in the uterus of females. A pelvic scan helps you to know the reason for the heavy bleeding.

Health Complications of Anemia in Women:

Sometimes iron deficiency anemia doesn’t cause complications and problems can easily solve. But if it is left untreated, then it caused very severe complications in women. Sometimes it leads to some other health issues and sometimes it may cause even death. Some complications are the following

  • Severe fatigue
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Complications in pregnancy
  • Delayed growth in infants
  • Death

Severe fatigue:

Due to the deficiency of blood, you feel so tired and you cannot perform your daily activities.

Irregular Heartbeats:

Iron deficiency anemia causes irregular heartbeats (heart arrhythmia). Because due to deficiency of blood in the body your heart pumps more blood to maintain the deficiency of blood in the body.

The pressure on the heart will increases. This condition leads to irregular heartbeats. If left untreated it can lead to heart failure and heart enlargement.

Complications in Pregnancy:

The deficiency of iron causes complications in the pregnancy. Due to this reason, the baby may be born prematurely or with low birth weight.

Pregnant women take iron supplements to cure this disease.

Delayed Growth of Babies:

An iron deficiency cause growth issues in newly born babies. This condition increases the risk of infections in children.

Death:

Losing a lot of blood cause severe anemia that can lead to death.

Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia:

Iron deficiency anemia can be treated in the following ways:

  • Diet
  • Use Iron supplements
  • Treating the cause of bleeding

Diet:

Women should take care of their diet. Take a diet that contains iron. For example

  • Dried fruits
  • Red meat
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Iron cereals
  • Vitamin C supplements

Vitamin C supplement helps to absorb iron in your body. All these things increase the level of iron in your body.

Use Iron Supplements:

Iron supplements can help to restore the level of iron in your body. Iron supplements should take on an empty stomach.

This will help the body to absorb iron. You can take them with your meal too.

Treating Underlying Bleeding Cause:

You should visit your doctor for the treatment of heavy bleeding. The doctor prescribed you birth control pills.

These pills reduce the amount of menstrual bleeding and reduce blood loss.
